Dutch term

plantenkweker

Dutch to English Other Agriculture
Just wanted to check. Many dictionaries suggest 'plant breeder', however, in this instance these are growers who raise vegetable seedlings (the seedlings are grown into adult plants by other growers, known here as the 'telers'). I thought maybe just 'seedling growers', but I don't get as much 'google support' for this as I would have thought!

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Buck

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

sindy cremer Aug 5, 2009:
what's wrong with seedling grower?

By the way: seedling growers don't necessarily use seed from their own crops:

http://www.freshplaza.com/news_detail.asp?id=1831 :
“Because Withcott Seedlings is not a breeder or grower of tomatoes and prevents seed breeders bringing seed into the nursery through its quality assurance measures, there is no chance of disease transfer."..... Mr Prendergast said while tomato varieties to be grown at the facility were still under discussion, the seed would be sourced from Holland.

A horticulturist friend says they are generally called "nurseryman." (US). These folks all meet and just ask each other "what they grow." Nurseryman who grows seedlings. Dat is dan een van de variaties die je kunt gebruiken. Nurseryman has a "scientific" connotation more so than "farmers."

Ambiguiteit met farmers who cultivate crops for seed production. Dat IS toch wat zaadtelers doen?
Note from asker:
Yes, but isn't there some ambiguity with farmers who cultivate crops for seed production?
Ik begrijp niet precies je vraag. 'Seed cultivators' groeien gewassen om de zaad te oogsten en verkopen deze. As far as I know...
'Seed cultivators' = 'Zaadtelers' ja, maar ik zoek de vertaling van 'plantenkweker', iemand die zaad opkweekt tot zaailingen (in mijn tekst).
