UCITS regulations currently prohibit the short selling of physical securities but allow the creation of synthetic-short positions through the use of cash settled derivatives such as equity swaps (contracts for difference), as long as any exposure created is covered by the assets of the Fund. The establishment and maintenance of a short position in equities can involve greater risks than would be the case with a long position.
