"Los rodales irregulares son comúnmente caracterizados por tres variables: el diámetro máximo, densidad o número de pies y el factor q (PENG, 2000); q es la razón de decrecimiento entre una clase diamétrica y la inmediata superior, que viene dada por la expresión general ; en la que se considera que es el número de pies incluidos en la clase diamétrica i+1 y el número de pies incluidos en la clase diamétrica i, q se considera constante a lo largo de la vida del árbol.

Discussion

Russell Keeley Feb 12, 2010:
Would be losing information with this Ratios are a way of showing changes in value between two numbers and can express increases, decreases or no change at all. Here the author is saying that this ratio shows how much one value has decreased compared with the previous one, and therefore is also suggesting that it never increases or stays the same. You would be losing this information if you used 'common ratio'.
neilmac (asker) Feb 12, 2010:
Have asked client I think they just mean "common ratio", and the "decrecimiento" part is just another of this author's foibles (Spanish friends have assured me he has a somewhat idiosyncratic, complicated way of expressing things). Am waiting confirmation as "soy de letras" and stats always look a bit alien to me

Client says they just meant "ratio", the decre... bit was them adding extra info which they have now removed. Thanks to everyone for the help :)

decreasing rate

se refiere a la tasa de decrecimiento. Ver ejemplo.
Example sentence:

Height growth usually ceases or becomes negligible at about 140 to 150 years (30). Diameter growth continues at a decreasing rate with age and size.

Note from asker:
Al final el cliente no sabia decirme si se trataba de un incremento o al contrario. Han quitado este componente de la frase :-) Gracias ;)

ratio of decrease

I think 'decreasing ratio' is a little misleading as this suggests that the ratio itself is decreasing, which I don't think is what is intended by the text. I believe it is just referring to the difference in size or value between the two classes expressed as a ratio. The equation that is missing from the text would help to confirm this, but I would presume that it is something along the lines of two factors divided together.

A few selected examples:

Turns out the client took out the "decreasing" bit, but you get the points for your thorough exposition and handy links :-)
