Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Rob Grayson

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

liz askew Mar 8, 2010:
I see you have closed the question .."client was unable to help". So what did you do then?
Ken Fagan (X) (asker) Mar 8, 2010:

In the meantime, I've asked the client for help...

updates

I take this to mean computer software updates

thank you, Catharine (the final client was unable to help)
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : then how would you translate mises à jour ??
8 mins
By the same word. It's basically the same concept seen from two different sides. The software developer 'fait evoluer'/develops his software, and the end-user 'met à jour'/updates the software.

neutral Lucy-Jane Michel : I'm not convinced évolutions and mises à jour can be seen as the same thing...

neutral liz askew : Now we are being "anal", I see you have put "...develops his software"....and "updates the software"...two different words in English:)

disagree gail desautels : distinguish between updates (minor) and upgrades...the difference being with upgrades is that there is usually a version upgrade (change of numbers)
2 days 11 hrs
disagree Tony M : I'm with Gail; I've just done a very similar document, and the specific difference was made very clear. A 'mise à jour' can be as little as a patch; whereas an 'évolution' is definitely an upgrade, and may even be a whole new version

I think I would go for "development", FWIW:)
Note from asker:
thank you, Liz (the final client was unable to help)
After asking that expert, submitting the question to my peers on Proz (no consensus) and asking the agency to ask the final client (all of the above 3 business days before the deadline), I had no choice but to deliver the job, with the word "evolutions" flagged. I'll let you know if I hear anything.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : These references are about telephones, not software.

évoluer = to change/to evolve/to develop. I think your point is irrelevant. (even if I am being "anal")
disagree Tony M : In this specific IT context, both 'change' and 'progress' are to vague, 'évolution' has a quite specific technical meaning
