I could say "a `brooding' session or `worrying' session" (by session, meaning a psychiatric appointment/consultation), but the fact that "Sorgensprechstunde" has some Google hits on its own suggests to me that it is a generally used term, not a made-up term (with respect to the fact that it is in quote marks). I'm not sure what such a term would be in English. TIA!
Die Patienten lernen, diese Prozesse zu kontrollieren und auf einen späteren, im Voraus festgelegten Termin, die «Grübel-» oder «Sorgensprechstunde», aufzuschieben.

time for worries
or
"appointment" with troubles/concerns/worries
or similar
IMO this does not necessarily refer to an actual consultation of a psychiatrist, but rather to an appointed time and place to which the patient is supposed to limit his worries, ponderings etc. In analogy to the other term you asked, this is obviously intended as a means for gaining control over those mental processes (worrying, brooding, etc.) which before have been controlling the patient.
Google hits for Sorgensprechstunde do not suggest a technical term to me, since Sorgensprechstunde appears in a number of different contexts (e. g. education, social life, animal breeding) beyond psychiatry, generally meaning an appointed time and place where any kind of concerns can be addressed.

Note from asker:
You're absolutely right in your reasoning, leaving aside the question of whether this is the best way to translate it or not. I was thrown off by dictionary definitions for "Sprechstunde" ("clinical consultation") and when I noticed non-psychiatric subjects in the Google hits for "Sorgensprechstunde," I was so conditioned to think in terms of "worries" (psychological issues) that I really didn't look to see how the term might apply to animal breeding! There's a lesson to be learned here somewhere. (Avoid online dictionaries?!) |

Comment: "It's hard to grade this, because it turns out that the reference IS to a consultation with the therapist. I was perplexed by the fact that various native German speakers here viewed the matter differently, so I asked the German editor of the article. She thought that it did refer to a professional appointment. But I think Gerd made the case that it NEED NOT have been meant that way, and her input was thoughtful and useful. I ended up using my own translation, since I didn't think any of the others proposed worked quite as well: "They learn to control these processes and to postpone their `ruminating' or `worrying' session to a later, pre-arranged appointment." Thanks to all for your help!"

anxiety meditation session
I am no psychologist, but an MD with some basic knowledge of psychiatry. Thus, a medium CL, but it does sound quite convincing, doesn't it?
In any way, I hope it helps you further

: meditation is a quite specific technique that involves letting go of thoughts, not talking about them - there is no indication that meditation is being referred to here

therapeutic sharing session
that's how I would call it - a special time in the counseling process that is set aside to allow the disclosure of fears and the sharing of worries.

This is no misplaced answer. I simply wanted to suggest another alternative!

Did you intend to post a reference here, or is this a misplaced answer? |
I see, thanks. Usually people put suggestions that they don't want to post as an "answer" under "discussion," and "reference" is for links--so I thought maybe you forgot to put the link in. :-) |

(Sorry for unauthorized interjection of humor, but this is too funny not to post. Web contexts like this are what confused me about the meaning of this sentence.)
