Finnish term

savuttaa

Finnish to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
From a brochure about rubber shock-absorbing pads, feet, etc. for use with machinery:

"Varsinainen tärinäneristys savutetaan mitoittamalla eristimet siten, että päädytään ylikriittiseen eristykseen."

most likely a typo in the source text; it should read "saavutetaan" as in "saavuttaa", v.tr.

agree Timo Lehtilä : Yes, and the speller has accepted 'savuttaa', because it is a correct word form meaning 'to (give off) smoke'

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for identifying the typo, which was the source of my confusion. If anyone is looking at this page at a later date, please note that "achieve" would be a better translation of saavuttaa."

Finnish term (edited): saavuttaa

achieve

In the context, saavutetaan is best translated as "is achieved", or "is brought about". The sentence might read: actual shock absorption is achieved by using pads that are more than thick enough to absorb it.
Note from asker:
Yes, thanks, it was the typo that had confused me. Job has been delivered already, and I did use "achieve".
