a little dab'll do ya

Non-PRO English to Spanish Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hola,

me gustaría saber qué significa esta expresión: a little dab'll do ya

Al parecer viene de un antiguo anuncio, no?

En mi contexto lo dice alguien que le aplica compresas a una persona herida.

Gracias

I at least cannot imagine me "running my fingers smoothly through their lovely, soft, clean hair"!!!! (eeegghh!!! What a though!! I'd immediately rush off to not wash, but to scrub my hands!). However, as they say in Spain, "No hay nada escrito sobre gustos".
margaret caulfield Apr 18, 2010:
@Robert, Yes, I see it on many young people's hair and I still find it really YUGHY! I feel tempted to offer them the name of a good shampoo!!
Robert Forstag Apr 18, 2010:
@Margaret Apparently, it is making a comeback (see the wikipedia article I've referenced). Although my guess is that a lot of its appeal has to do with the nostalgia of older men who remember it from their youth. The same would apply to Vitalis (another "greasy" hair-styling product)....
margaret caulfield Apr 18, 2010:
@Robert You're nearly giving away your age here! I wonder if the younger peers have ever heard of "Brylcreem". (jeje). YUGH! I thought it looked hideous even when I was a child. Too greasy!
Robert Forstag Apr 18, 2010:
Correct spelling: Brylcreem See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brylcreem
Robert Forstag Apr 18, 2010:
From an old jingle.... For Brylcream, a men's hair-styling product. Popular in the 60s and 70s. It still exists as far as I know. Complete jingle:

"Brylcream, a little dab 'll do ya. For men who lose their heads about their hair."

"toquecillo" en el caso de sustancias de cualquier tipo (cremas, gel, líquidos, pomadas, etc.)

"gotita" sólo en el caso de líquidos

"poquito" - bueno, no hace falta explicación alguna, creo yo...

Slogan from Brylcreem

Lyrics for the Brylcreem jingle:

Bryl-creem, a little dab'll do ya,
Use more, only if you dare,
But watch out,
The gals will all pursue ya,--
They'll love to put their fingers through your hair.

Bryl-creem, a little dab'll do ya,
Bryl-creem, you'll look so debonair.
Bryl-creem, the gals will all pursue ya,
They'll love to RUN their fingers through your hair.

A little will suffice.

HTH!

agree Robert Forstag : This is the complete jingle. It must have run in ads before my time though, because I can only remember the shortened version I've cited above. :D
