History
Dutch military tradition has never been vested in the army, which with a few notable exceptions has been a career market for dropouts from the higher classes. When brighter elements opted for an army career it was mostly a second choice. The outstanding commanders in the Dutch defense-system were mostly found in the navy and not in the army.
