Ustawienie postaci przełamuje podziały, ale i tu Ołtarz Mariacki nie był jedynym wzorem, o czym znów dobitnie świadczy ustawienie postaci apostołów. Trzeba też dodać, że w tym czasie w Małopolsce powstawały również dzieła, wykazujące raczej ograniczone pokrewieństwa z Ołtarzem Mariackim (kwatera z Zaśnięciem Marii w Poliptyku Olkuskim).
Zaczynając od tej ostatniej: dzieło jest pentaptykiem pozornym, to znaczy spośród dwóch par skrzydeł tylko wewnętrzna jest ruchoma, a każde skrzydło jest podzielone nie na dwie, lecz na trzy kwatery.
