I'm in an interpretion and we're speaking specifically of the Mexican Departmento de la Marina; I know it's not the Navy, because the subject of the interp is fisheries and conservation of the marine ecosystems; what would this be equivalent to in the US? Fishing? Oceans? this is really embarrassing, but i'm drawing a complete blank.

If you read more carefully you will see it is talking about fisheries and conservation, in my opinion that's wildlife and besides it is a department in US government with similar functions as that of Mexico.
