Yet I would like to suggest that these purpose could also read as a museology, that the painting could be mistaken for the retro-futurism of a museum, and that the pairing of distant origin and immediacy of experience reads – in speculative retrospect – as a curatorial act. That the Crucifixion has been installed into a juxtaposition with something that was already a ruin, to illuminate each other – or have each other’s epiphany –, to make tense, reciprocal sense. That the painting can be seen, or imagined, from the angle opposite to the one where the remnants of the statue will fall, and crush heterodoxy, from an angle where the traits of Apollo, and the ideas of beauty, truth and measure they incorporated, can be discerned. By virtue of the movements and thoughts it deploys or allows, I would like to describe this site as a section in a museum of art history. Such a place would museify a discipline, rather than the object of its discourse; it would serve as an observation point for the strategies via which an essentially impalpable transaction between objects of historical desire has been apprehended and defined, categorized and purged of its shadows, adjusted to modes and sites of enunciation, felt with institutional limbs and configured between disciplinary ***props***. Such a museum would map the workings of a decrepit yet functional discursive apparatus and the topography it permanently repossesses, its ability to conceptualize and address the present, in tandem with its capacity to imagine and fabricate a future.
