Spanish term

Gigantografía

Spanish to English Art/Literary Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) This is for an academic publication
I am looking for the correct TECHNICAL TERM used in a museum setting to translate "gigantografías."
Is "photographic enlargements" appropriate, or is "mural" a better rendering?
I HAVE found references to "gigantography" in English to refer to the general process/industry of producing photographs in excess of standard poster size (in excess of 100x70 cm).
"Panoramic photographic enlargement" or “mural” works, but I need to make sure that the term I use is appropriate for an academic publication.

Discussion

Frensp Sep 6, 2010:
Translucent scrim A *photographic scrim* also often refers to a photo lighting accessory rather than a type of photo. It is the medium, not the image. I am not certain that it would be the ideal choice in this case.

I am not certain either that we can decide on whether these images are actually translucent as they may have the same degree of transparence on both sides if they are meant to be looked at from both sides.
Not an easy one...
Jenni Lukac (X) Sep 6, 2010:
FYI, the word "scrim" is borrowed from theatre terminology and the idea to use them in museum installations probably came from theatrical set design.
Jenni Lukac (X) Sep 6, 2010:
If Frensp's reference photograph is correct, and it seems to be, this would be referred to as a large-scale translucent photographic scrim (example in my entry below).
Frensp Sep 6, 2010:
Image Have you looked at the document that I have used as a reference and the image on page 17? If - and I do mean if - it is the same exhibition, we know what some of these *gigantografías* actually look like.
Chris Lovelace (asker) Sep 6, 2010:
More specifically, I just found out that this is a description of an exhibit at the National Historical Museum in Buenos Aries. I'm not sure if that helps identify what kind of display it is. I have not been able to find a site that describes this in English.
Chris Lovelace (asker) Sep 6, 2010:
Here is the context Here is part of the context, which is talking about museum exhibits: "Una serie de ‘retablos’ separados entre sí por gigantografías transparentes plantea diferentes etapas históricas y permite al visitante ver desde el inicio el proceso histórico en forma de capas. Las gigantografías reproducen por lo general a personas anónimas que simbolizan la comunidad nacional abstracta:..."
Jenni Lukac (X) Sep 6, 2010:
I wouldn't use 'panoramic' as a generally term because they may be big but not necessarily long horizontally. I was an installation artist and I have worked a lot with museums: if 'gigantography' is a term used by certain commercial labs, it is certainly not the term museums use to describe photo murals. In general, whatever is put on the wall is referred to as 'wallpaper' but as this is specifically photographic and not a pattern backdrop, I would stick with photographic mural.
Hola Chris Necesitaríamos el contexto y dependiendo del contexto, podría tratarse de "billboards", "enlargements", "prints", etc...
philgoddard Sep 6, 2010:
Please could we have the Spanish context - otherwise we're relying on your interpretation of what it means.

Oops, meant to say that 'panels' could also be considered. It would be helpful to know how these were supported (hung from tracks on the ceiling, etc.).

agree philgoddard : All of these are possibilities, depending on the exact context (though "wall mural" is a tautology)

Thanks, Phil. I never understand why the clients don't provide images for these projects...

(photographic) enlargement(s)/ blow up(s)

If I have found the right document using the sentence in your discussion entry, these are obviously not all wall murals nor all panomaric (cf photo p. 17).
Note from asker:
I posted this answer earlier, but I do't see it here: Yes, this is EXACTLY what the author is talking about. The article I am doing is based on this one, apparently. It's great that you found this.
The answer "large-scale translucent photographic screen" seems to fit this illustration very well, don't you think?
