Discussion

BettyBO (asker) Sep 11, 2010:
@philgoddard: I was just asking for a relatively small advise considering that the whole essay consists of 55 pages and it is not for an english exam.
I developed the concepts and ideas and merely need help in writing some of them in the best english possible.
philgoddard Sep 10, 2010:
Are you allowed to get other people to do your exam projects for you?
James (Jim) Davis Sep 10, 2010:
There should be a box "note to answerer" near the answer. You must have accessed the page as the poster of the question.
BettyBO (asker) Sep 10, 2010:
curiosity: how do you post a comment directly under the answer? (I'm new here, never used this website before)
James (Jim) Davis Sep 10, 2010:
lo sguardo This is virtually used by Italian art critics as a technical term which doesn't have an equivalent in English, except the literal translation of gaze, which tends to suggest sleepiness or distraction. So I judge each case separately, depending on the context.
Obviously my translation should be present tense.
BettyBO (asker) Sep 10, 2010:
Thank you James for your prompt reply! I think "attention" is the best choice considering I'm dealing with contemporary art.

Selected

his gaze was focused on external reality

If you feel "gaze" is too literal then "attention".
Note from asker:
Found it! thanks!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Silvia Socinovi : ok but...shouldn't it be "is focused"?

his attention is directed towards external reality

I think "attention" is a good term, too
Peer comment(s):

agree Annamaria Sondrio (X) : I would just change "is directed towards" to "focusses/is focussed on".
