iced-cake style

I attended a school from this era (in more ways than one!) and the building is described in a local-history book I have as "an interesting local example of the 'iced-cake' style of the period".
Hope this helps - it keeps the 'cake' imagery!
Peer comment(s):

agree heikeb : I was thinking along the lines of "icing" as well. cf:Stucco is cement stuck onto the bricks like icing on a cake and is shaped into decorative patterns. http://www.brysonhouse.co.uk/Educate/VictorianHousing.asp

I agree with Karen, but do not disagree with Lars Peter.
I checked in Collins, which suggests Gothic Revival or neogothic and gives the Houses of Parliament in London as an example.
What could be more iced-cake style?

gothic

George's answer above is certainly closest to the Swedish, and a good translation. But in English, the commonest word about such architecture is the rather less exciting word 'gothic' - see ref about St Pancras
Peer comment(s):

disagree Mario Marcolin : Gothic revival was an early Victorian style(1840s/50s). I think the bldg in Luluå is ca 1900

Queen Victoria died in 1901 ! But you have a point. Gothic is an earlier style.
neutral George Hopkins : Collins, quote: Gothic Revival a Gothic style of architecture popular between the late 18th and late 19th centuries, exempified by the Houses of Parliament in London (1840). Also called neogothic.
