This specifically mentions 製品の小型化, so clearly in this case 船内の合理化 refers to the fact a smaller gearbox allows a more efficient use of space within the vessel.

streamline inside the ship

合理化 can be said in many different ways but I have seen "streamline" often to mean that. So I wanted to add my two-cents worth of input.
