German term

Strahlenempfänger

German to English Art/Literary Electronics / Elect Eng
"Wenn ich mir ein Gedicht als einen Strahlenempänger vorstelle, so ist es sinnlos, in einem deutschen Gedicht etwas 'typisch Deutsches' zu suchen. Denn es empfängt immer etwas Fremdes und niemals sich selbst."

As you can see from the quote, the explanation for the unusual pairing of "Art/Literary" and "Engineering" is that this is a technical device being used as a metaphor in literary criticism. The author is comparing the poem to a Strahlenempfänger, the overall suggestion being that the poem is receptive, even at the time of its composition, to other languages, and thus well suited for translation. I had imagined this as a sort of antenna, receiving signals of a general sort, but references I can find to the term seem limited to more technical applications. Is this a specific sort of instrument used to receive or measure a particular type of radiation, or can the term be applied more generally to anything that receives signals?

Discussion

Bernd Runge Mar 14, 2011:
receiver wäre meine Interpretation des Ganzen.
Coqueiro Mar 14, 2011:
contemporary? "Strahlungsempfänger" to me sounds somewhat oldfashioned and google let me suppose that the term ist more often used by patent-translators than by tecnicians. So could you please give us the .... thank you! ;-)
Kurt Beals (asker) Mar 14, 2011:
This is by Yoko Tawada in 1996, writing about Paul Celan.
Johanna Timm, PhD Mar 14, 2011:
Frame of reference When exactly was this "quote" written? Strahlensender/ -empfänger >>-early 20th century/ G. Benn?
Knowing the time might help us understand what the author might have had in mind with his Strahlenempfänger metaphor.
Kurt Beals (asker) Mar 14, 2011:
I'd like to know what the actual range of meaning for the term is--so I'd rather have input on exactly what this means, rather than suggestions of alternative metaphors. I may or may not end up using the precise technical term in English, but I want to be sure I know what the metaphor is referring to.
Lancashireman Mar 14, 2011:
Blurred question Do you want something that fits the actual Art/Literary context or explains the Electronics term ("Is this a specific sort of instrument ...)?
I suspect you will get people answering from both angles and then disappoint half of them when you close the question.

Radiance receptor

Radiance is the quality of being bright and sending out rays of light, thus we can imagine the poem to be radiance receptor which receives the radiance from not only the language in which it is written but from various languages.
