Spanish term

arcornia

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Misspelled or misunderstood word
I am translating a document for a woman from Guatemala who is filing a peition with US immigration. She mentions that two of her children have asthma, and that four of them have "arcornia." She adds that she is grateful to God for the fact that there are specialists here who can treat the disease. Perhaps "arcornia" exists, but I can't find any mention of it on line, and I have a feeling it might be an attempt to write a word as it sounds to the writer. Any suggestions? Thanks to all!

What is was I spoke with the lady this evening, and she passed me over to one of her daughters. The desease was corneal dystrophy, which no one was able to translate to the mom into Spanish, so she made up her own word for it. Thanks to all!
Ron Hartong PhD (X) Feb 20, 2012:
Agreed Liz, that's what I would do.
liz askew Feb 20, 2012:
Hi, we have now had several efforts/guesses for this one. As I said, best to put a footnote on this one. You might like to list the guesses.
Ron Hartong PhD (X) Feb 20, 2012:
Arteria coronaria? Apart from the possibility that the woman is referring to something related to 'córnea', she might also be talking about 'enfermedad de la arteria coronaria', or coronary artery disease (which runs in families).

I wouldn't dare to translate Arcornia as such, but maybe you could offer it as a suggestion in a translator's note.
liz askew Feb 18, 2012:
I wouldn't even guess this one, but put a footnote saying "unfindable". No point in guessing, particularly as this involves a medical problem.
Emiliano Pantoja Feb 18, 2012:
ausencia de córnea?
DLyons Feb 18, 2012:
@David Certainly plausible "sufren de la córnea" = "corneitis" = "have itchy eyes", albugo, chemosis ...
David Hollywood Feb 18, 2012:
as the Spanish is wobbling and teetering on the brink of the language precipice I would suugest "itchy eyes" but don't quote me on it ...

Read about eye allergy causes, symptoms (red, stinging, swollen and itchy eyes) and ... Contact lenses fit over the cornea and correct vision problems such as ...
Kathleen, I would strongly suggest that you shorten that quote or remove it entirely and start from "y 4". There could be identifying information in there.
Kathleen Shelly (asker) Feb 17, 2012:
liz askew Feb 17, 2012:
Why don't you post a few sentences in Spanish?
DLyons Feb 17, 2012:
ardentía? Doesn't sound very likely, but I can't think of anything closer = pirosis/ardor de estómago.

enfisemía would make more sense but is even more different.

Perhaps, something related to "esclerosis sistémica (ES)" pathology, closes I can thing about are " clavos córneos" some non Spanish speakers use "cornio" and when I was MWB Guatemala, several people refers "el mal o la enfermedad de cornios".

If no chances to go back to source, my recommendation is leave the term and make a note / comment in that way IS´s can later ask her. (They will for sure) or also there is a chance to ask the type of MD dealing with this disease.

Good look!
