Hello everybody,
In a financial analysis regarding the eurozone, I don't know how to translate into French "buying the market" in the following sentence :
"SELLING VOLATILITY IS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN BUYING THE MARKET".
I assume it means buying stocks which appear to be attractive according to the market (Maybe I'm wrong?)

En fait, "buy the market" revient à se contenter du rendement offert par un marché/indice donné (ex.: CAC 40, S&P 500, etc.), en essayant de calquer son portefeuille d'actions sur la composition/pondération de cet indice (on appelle ça "répliquer").

D'ailleurs quand "buy the market" est précédé de "simply", il m'arrive de traduire ça par "se contenter du rendement du marché"

: "répliquer un indice"="tracking an index" might be part of an investment strategy resulting in "buying the market", but "répliquer un indice" might as well lead to getting out of some markets (ie selling). "tracking an index" is not the term to translate.

I agree that "répliquer un indice"="tracking an index" and that this is not the term to translate. But sometimes, picking a quasi-synonym is a good solution. And in that context, "répliquer un indice" fits the meaning

: You can find "acheter le marché" in french-speaking medias dealing with finance. But this "word-to-word" translation sounds empty. Did you know that, for instance, OECD glossary advises to avoid the buzzword "dans la monnaie" to translate "in the money"?

this is the jargon of a specific profession - how outsiders feel about their lingo is not their concern. Even better for them if outsiders can't make head or tail of it. That's the term they use - checked more than one reference, no point listing them all

Discussion
ALSO to clarify:
"SELLING VOLATILITY" as in the volatility of the selling process or
or
"SELLING VOLATILITY" as in selling some products (like derivatives) using their volatility as selling point?
That would make sense a lot (more to earn from trading derivatives than the currency or shares themselves) but it’s only a guess until the whole sentence is given.
