Discussion

literary (asker) Jun 26, 2012:

cytat: przeszkody w pokonywaniu szlaku wodnego (np. śluzy)
Mariusz Kuklinski Jun 24, 2012:
Filtered askers Great idea, Dariusz. I've never thought I'd make use of this function but I'll follow you. Now that you mentioned this, filtering rude responders out is possible on ProZ too.
literary (asker) Jun 24, 2012:
pytam o "pokonywanie szlaku wodnego"
petrolhead Jun 24, 2012:
@literary Już na samym początku sugerowałem żeby spróbować z "waterway(s)":

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/waterway?...

np.:
"(to) negotiate obstacles while (during) sailing along (steaming) the waterway(s)"
petrolhead Jun 24, 2012:

POKONYWAĆ przeszkody w POKONYWANIU szlaku wodnego (np. śluzy)

Przykładów przytoczyliśmy aż nadto, więc nie rozumiem pytania "Czy to dowód?"
Caryl Swift Jun 23, 2012:
And... "The river below the Missiger dam is a steady flowing stream with no rapids or gorges to negotiate. (http://tinyurl.com/7v7q83c)

"Negotiate the rapids at Lanier Falls and the Fish Traps on the portion of the Cape Fear Canoe Trail which runs through the park." (http://tinyurl.com/7xkghmc)

"MV Reef Endeavour’s small size means she can negotiate remote reefs, islands and shallow bays where bigger ships just cannot go." (http://tinyurl.com/7v6s8yd)

etcetera, etcetera, ectetera, etcetera
Caryl Swift Jun 23, 2012:
One can, of course... also negotiate obstacles:

"Fearful Soldiers should be encouraged to negotiate the easier obstacles before attempting the higher more difficult ones. Some of the higher, more difficult obstacles may be negotiated as a group effort, with stronger Soldiers assisting those unable to negotiate the obstacles by themselves. Gradually, as their confidence and negotiation skills improve, the weaker Soldiers will be able to successfully negotiate all obstacles individually. PRT leaders and AIs should be available to assist Soldiers in proper obstacle negotiation throughout the course." (http://tinyurl.com/8x9vn3k)
literary (asker) Jun 23, 2012:
@Allda
"modern ships, which were too big to negotiate the inland waterway, rendered the canal defunct."
ten przykład wreszcie jest dobry
Darius Saczuk Jun 23, 2012:
Na poparcie "negotiate" wystarczy otworzyć zwykły studencki słownik Longmana, na przykład Longman Advanced American Dictionary.:
2) negotiate - to succeed in getting past or over a difficult place on a path, road etc.: Drivers have to negotiate high mountain roads with narrow bends.
Darius Saczuk Jun 23, 2012:
Allda Jun 23, 2012:
inny przykład In 1846, the railway came and this, coupled with the introduction of modern ships, which were too big to negotiate the inland waterway, rendered the canal defunct.
http://www.ulverstoncouncil.org.uk/education_1.php

Waterway or water trail negotiation @ Polangmar

WATER TRAIL NEGOTIATION
"Follow the Basswood River to Crooked Lake, turn south at Friday Bay, and negotiate a series of small lakes back to the put-in point.

NEGOTIATING WATERWAYS
"Negotiating waterways is also an important skill taught during training. Determining river width, current speed and drift downstream are all vital parts of crossing a river. Crossings are taught using both rafts and ropes. Making several kinds of rafts is also covered, ..."

PRZESZKODY WODNE:

Czy to już wystarczy?
petrolhead Jun 23, 2012:

"While soft soil is relative to vehicle ground pressure, there is little that can be done to negotiate very rocky terrain or cliffs except by using specially trained light infantry troops. "

negotiate

jedna z możłiwości

"High currents can create unsafe conditions, since vessels without enough engine power can be severely affected by water current velocities. Some vessels have difficulty ***negotiating*** tight turns in high currents and narrow channels."

See "Discussion"
Note from asker:
"negotiate an obstacle" gugluje dobrze; ale cały szlak (route)?
"negotiate the river" - czy to dowód?
Peer comment(s):

agree Allda : good option; to negotiate = to move through, around, or over in a satisfactory manner

Thank you. Much appreciated :-)
agree Anna Lycett (X) : Negotiate is OK.

Thank you!
disagree Dorota Zegarowska : Lilian is ma rację. Słowo „negotiate” absolutnie tu nie pasuje. Tu chodzi bowiem o FIZYCZNE pokonywanie przeszkód.

To overcome obstacles

There might be something better but this is close.

This may not be the best option, but it is definitely not negotiate in this context.

face challenges

Propozycja

Example sentence:

Face challenges on water routes

Peer comment(s):

disagree Mariusz Kuklinski : You face a challenge canoeing down the rapids rather than going through a lock

However, I contributed this to the general discussion as regards the use of 'negotiate'.
