PET/CT image fusion improved the anatomic localization of 98 (63%) of these lesions. Characteristic examples included the differentiation between increased FDG uptake in lymph nodes versus that in skeletal muscles (in particular in patients who had previously undergone radiation therapy or surgery), exact assignment of lymph node stations (level I–VI) for nodal metastases, differentiation between physiologic unilateral vocalis muscles activity versus laryngeal tumor, malignant lymph node uptake versus unilateral salivary gland activity, and FDG uptake in fat tissue versus that in the lymph nodes.
