German term

Vergeblicher Drang

German to English Medical Livestock / Animal Husbandry Veterinary medicine
The text is about homoeopathic remedies for animals.

Reisekrankheit/Fahrkrankheit/Streß

Verschlimmerung: morgens, bei Bewegung, leichter Berührung, kalter Luft

Besserung: Ruhe, warm zudecken, Druck am Kopf
schlank, Hager, meist dunkelhaarig, Obstipation mit vergeblichem Drang, Krampfneigung

Hyoscyamus Tiere:
argwöhnisch, eifersüchtig, Neigung zu Wutanfällen, streitsüchtig, unpassendes Verhalten

I assume vergeblicher Drang refers to Harndrang and the animals not being able to go to the toilet - I have used "unsuccessful attempts to pass water or excrement" - Would this be correct?

ineffectual urge

constipation with ineffectual urge

From your context it would appear to refer to Defäkationsdrang (Stuhldrang) and not Harndrang (urinary urge)

unsuccessful urge

I think unsuccessful urge or unsuccessful attempt (slightly less literal, but how do you know an animal has an urge unless you see the attempt).

According to Duden Fremdwörter, Obstipation is specifically Stuhlverstopfung, i.e. constipation, so I think you can omit the passing water and translate as "unsuccessful attempt to pass a motion", or whatever delicate phrase you choose to use.

futile straining

If it means what you think it means, this is how I'd describe it (no veterinary expertise though!)
Peer comment(s):

agree Fantutti (X) : simply: straining. My cat's got Urinal Tract Disease, and that's - in vet lingo - what he's doing very often.
