English term

supported by its apex at the instant in which he presents it

English to Hungarian Art/Literary Poetry & Literature supported by its apex at the instant in which he presents it
Arthur Symons, who also speaks of Wilde assuming "un masque de parade" before certain people in order to "aston¬ish and amuse and exasperate them," says that he was always at his best when one was alone with him. He describes him as always "effective" rather than "reflective," and points out the essential logicality of his conversation:
His mind was eminently reasonable, and if you look closely into his wit, you will find that it has always a basis of logic, though it may indeed most probably be supported by its apex at the instant in which he presents it.
Wilde, says Symons, was a greater personality than an art¬ist, and it was for this reason that his talk was so interesting, and the part of his writing which resembled talk more inter¬esting than the rest.

[1]
"apex of wit" = "peak of wit": kurrens kifejezések a sziporkázás pillanatára, a csúcsra, a poénre.
[2]
to have a basis of sg. ~ to be supported by sg.: párhuzamos, hasonló értelmű hasonlatok (az építőiparból), az előbbi az alapozásra, az utóbbi a (gótikus csúcs)ívekre utal, amelyek a felszökő sziporkákat támasztják alá.
[3]
to present one's wit = megcsillantani vki szellemességét

TEHÁT:

"szellemességének (~ sziporkáinak) mindig van logikai alapja, bár hatását (~ hatásukat) azért leginkább a kellő időzítésnek köszönheti".

Azaz szellemeskedése inkább a jókor elsütött poénokon (kicsúcsosodó pillanatokon) alapult, semmint a logikán/intellektuson.

A Proz ezt dörgöli az orrom alá:

The question you are about to answer is not among your general fields of expertise, is this intentional?

Hááát, mit mondjak...
