Pater, his master in prose, spoke of Wilde as an "excellent talker," though at other times he may have felt a certain rather envious contempt for this ephemeral occupation of Oscar's, since he also referred somewhat slightingly to "the strange vulgarity which Mr. Wilde mistakes for cleverness." But, then, Pater himself was so poor a talker that his lectures were almost inaudible, which once led Wilde to remark that he "overheard" him well.

THE LECTURE OVERHEARD BY WILDE: this card almost certainly dates from 1890: on Monday 24 November 1890, Pater gave a lecture on Prosper Mérimée at the London Institution (one he had delivered earlier in the month at the Taylor Institution, Oxford). It was printed in the Fortnightly Review, December 1890, and collected in Miscellaneous Studies: A Series of Essays (1895).
Oscar Wilde, who was living in London at the time, is recorded as having attended the lecture. Afterwards, when his admirers gathered round to congratulate him, Pater wondered if they could hear what he said. This prompted Wilde to quip 'We overheard you', and Pater to repost 'Ah, you have a phrase for everything' (see Robert Ross, Masques and Phases, 1909, p. 131). This letter is not printed in The Letters of Walter Pater, edited by Lawrence Evans (1970).

Itt az overhear elavult, Shakespeare által is használt értelmét kell vennünk, amikor valaki már megelégelte valaki beszédét. Wilde szándékosan használta a kétértelmű "overhear" igét, hogy ne lehessen azzal vádolni, hogy megbántotta mesterét. Itt az idézet Shakespeare-től: I stole into a neighbor thicket by, and overheard what you shall overhear. Amint danny boyd is jól érzi: itt az "inaudible" köré épül a mondat. A halk beszédet gúnyolja ki Wilde. "Pater maga azonban annyira rossz beszélő/szónok/előadó volt, hogy előadásait alig lehetett hallani -- ezért jegyezte meg róla Wilde egy alkalommal, hogy >>sikerült kihallgatnia<< őt." Annak érdekében, hogy az eredeti mondat szarkazmusát még jobban tükrözze, akár tovább is lehet fokozni: "sikerült véletletenül kihallgatnia".
