Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Feb 22, 2013:
Alternative I don't think this captures the meaning in English. 'Alternative' refers to lifestyle but not persons. No one would get the point.
Lucy Phillips Feb 22, 2013:
I've made some comments below about using alternative, which I think could work. With more context about the specific nature of her "alternativeness", other ideas might be 'indie' or 'rebellious'.

alternative teen

Ser alternativo não é necessariamente ruim. Pode até ser uma virtude, dependendo do ambiente ao redor. Isso vale também para os adolescentes.

agree Lucy Phillips : possibly. Teenager, though, not teen. And I think I would put "alternative" in quotation marks, it kind of helps to emphasise the idea that this is how the girl wants to be seen. http://teenagefilm.com/archives/tag/alternative

I believe this is the best option, because, from what I can aprehend, this geneneration's alternative look is fairly the same, namely, they all look a bit alike in their group. I think emo would be the most general of all, with other subcultures, of course.

But emo, means precisely that emotional, sensitive, art-driven, with the looks to go with it. I would translate like that.
Note from asker:
But this "emo" expression here means someone with specific aspects related to hair style etc.
I don't know, when we say "alternativa" here, like alternative, we refer to the behaviour as well, not just the look, perhaps eccentric???
