Spanish term

frigoríficos

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general) Statutory
Here is the context:

En un caso de disminución simultanea de compras de ganado por parte de tres grandes ::frigoríficos::, se estableció que “desde el punto de vista jurídico…no interesa a los fines da la configuración de la figura monopólica de dificultacion de la libre concurrencia, el mayor o menor poder que puedan (las empresas) tender sobre el mercado.
""
I believe it would be "cold storage" but could find no references. So something along the lines of: "In the case of simultaneous decreases in livestock purchases by three large cold storage companies, it was determined that ..."

Thanks.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): AllegroTrans

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

It is referencing South America. Thank you.
James A. Walsh Mar 21, 2013:
Is your text from Latin America? If so, the Oxford Spanish dictionary definition for that region is: "meat processing plant"

meat packers

The meat packing industry handles the slaughtering, processing, packaging, and distribution of animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep and other livestock. The industry is primarily focused on producing meat for human consumption, but it also yields a variety of by-products including hides, feathers, dried blood, and, through the process of rendering, fat such as tallow and protein meals such as meat & bone meal.
In the U.S. and some other countries, the facility where the meat packing is done is called a meat packing plant; in New Zealand, where most of the products are exported, it is called a freezing works. An abattoir is a place where animals are slaughtered for food.

If you put "meat processing plant" in Wikpedia, it redirects to meat packers and the text I have quoted.

neutral Francesca Samuel : James, it doesn't necessarily have to be a meat processing plant (P.R.).

Yes I know, but one of the definitions I provide says it does, and it matches the immediate context here.

Thanks.
disagree Giovanni Rengifo : "frigorífico" means "cold storage facility/plant" (at least where I come from).

I looked at the context, and provided a definition from a dictionary that matched that context. I wasn't even aware that "frigorífico" had this meaning, irrespective of what location it might apply to.

commercial meat freezers; purveyors (meat wholesalers/retail distribution)

I lived my entire childhood in my grandparents house above one. My grandfather owned two. Depending who is your target audience and at least in Puerto Rico (I don't know about the rest of the Caribbean), it is not necessarily synonymous with a meat processing plant. Ours was not. The meat got delivered and we would keep it stored for resale. We had 18 wheelers deliver every week from the docks, depending on the demand of the different products.

My family's business is still around after 60 years. It is the first link.

neutral patinba : All your dictionary refs relate to the word for a standard home refrigerator, ice chest or whatever, but not to the type of company that buys cattle and processes it. Also, the context indicates that the frigorífico purchased live cattle.
