German term
Obervogt
German to English
Other
History
Der Sitz des württembergischen Obervogts wurde nach Balingen verlegt, und die Ruine wurde als Steinbruch genutzt.
I have found many different translations for the word vogt but not really sure exactly what an Obervogt or indeed a vogt is.
I am assuming that Ober can be rendered as chief but the vogt part I am unsure about. The lack of an exact equivalent in English is what is causing me the most problems in translating this term.
It is for a tourism website describing the history of the town
Many thanks
Mark

An "Obervogt" was a regent, mostly a nobleman, who reigned in a territory of a King or an Emperor - which was the case in Germany in the Middle Ages - who was not able to reign. In the Netherlands and Luxemburg it was common to have a "Landvoogd"
