Curved Pull
Made from any dense, close-grained hardwood
such as maple, rosewood, or ebony, a curved
pull has a sophisticated look (A). The faux
screws shown here add to the charm, although
their main function is to conceal the screws that
secure the pull to the drawer.
Lay out the pull profile on the stock using two
plywood templates, one for the side of the pull
(B) and one for the top (C). Cut out the shape on
the bandsaw.
Use a drum or spindle sander to help fair the
curves and remove the saw marks; then counterbore,
countersink, and drill a shank hole at a
slight angle through the pull for screws (D). Plug
the hole with a dowel made from a contrasting
wood; but before you glue in the dowel, saw a
kerf in one end with a handsaw. Install the dowel
and tap a wedge into the kerf made from contrasting
wood to mimic the slotted head of a screw.
