A 1/16" stainless steel line (7) is run from the carbon dioxide
cylinder to the (MOVP-CO2) valve. The inside diameter of the
stainless steel tubing provided is 0.8mm. Smaller tubing than this
or any restrictions in the line, will lead to significant losses in
cooling efficiency. The line (7) is connected to the valve via a filter.
The connections should be made using VSR/16 sealing rings.
Mount the switching valve (MTV-3) in a convenient place on a
panel of the GC.

* The actuating gas should be connected to the MTV-3 valve as
shown in Diagram 2. For correct operation of the valve, it is
essential not to insert the stainless steel tubing too far as it may
damage the valve poppet. If automation of the cooling function is
required, the MTV-3 valve can be replaced by a solenoid valve

Operation

The cold trap operation is initiated by simply switching the MTV-3 (or
solenoid) valve which opens the cyogenic valve. The flow of liquid
carbon dioxide should be started a short time (30-60 seconds) prior
to the arrival in the capillary column of the compounds to be trapped.

Compounds with boiling points equivalent to C7 - C8 can be trapped
(and held in place in the trap) at an oven temperature up to 200єC. If
colder temperatures are required for successful cold trapping, liquid
nitrogen will be required as the coolant source (see note below).

When the flow of liquid carbon dioxide to the cold trap is stopped by
turning off the actuating air to the pneumatic head, the cold trap
heats up quickly and uniformly due to its low thermal mass design.

Installation
Although valve mounting orientation doesn't affect performance, valves BOSS
are usually installed vertically or horizontally. The 3/4" boss at the
base of the valve fits our CR4 clamp ring, facilitating a surface mount. AIR INLET
CR4
Use a 3-way (on/off) solenoid (VICI prod no: 31E1) to provide actua-
tor air to the air inlet port on the side of the valve body. Actuating gas
can be clean air or a pure gas. The 6 port and 4 port valves require 50 Figure 1:
psig for actuation; the 10 port valve needs 60 psig. Surface mount with a CR4

The air inlet fitting provided (prod no: ZAOR11) is for 1/16" OD tubing. This fitting can be replaced with
any fitting with 10-32 threads, such as a barbed fitting for 1/8" OD polymeric tubing (prod no: F-BF) or
a compression fitting for 1/8" metal tubing (prod no: EAOR21).
