Discussion

patrickfor Jan 10, 2014:
Yes Tony I am on your side and that's why I tried to translate buzzer wave (file) by electronic as opposed to more "natural" sound... so I would translate the other type of file by "son enregistré de type .WAV
One is "artiticially generated by electronics" where the other one is "natural, and recorded"
Tony M Jan 10, 2014:
@ Didier But one does have to look at the text as a whole: we have in fact 'buzzer waves and sound waves' — are you suggesting we can actually say 'ondes ronfleur et sonores'? How can you have a type of file that is a 'sound wave'? Still less a 'buzzer wave', if you go in that sense (which I do not!)

I repeat, I do not believe we can treat this is as the normal collocation 'sound waves' in this context, it makes no sense at all in EN.
Didier Fourcot Jan 10, 2014:
wav - standard audio file format used mainly in Windows PCs.
(...)It is less well known that wave files can also be encoded with a variety of codecs (...) A list of common wave file codecs can be found here
patrickfor Jan 10, 2014:
remember the not-so-old time where we had very basic sounds as ringtone they were buzzer type (a couple of frequencies max, basically like a good old telephone) then they introducted "polyphonic" that were still electronic sounds, and then came "music" that were recording of "real" streaming coming from a recorded song/voice etc.
Platary (X) Jan 10, 2014:
OK ?
Tony M Jan 10, 2014:
@ Adrien But we just wouldn't use the word 'wave' in the sort of way you suggest in EN; the sound of a buzzer might be made up of a mixture of sound waves of differing shapes and frequencies — but the term 'buzzer wave' would have no sense at all; at a pinch, one might talk of a 'buzzer waveform'

I agree with Patrick: 'waves' is being used here to cover the two broad catageories of .wav files used: ones that just produce a generic 'buzzer' noise (i.e. probably continuous, unchanging, no inherent meaning) and 'sound' (which will have some kind of content, be it music, speech, or any other kind of meaningful 'content').

Of course, the distinction being made here is that buzzer WAVES may be quite simple — just enough to define the required waveform, which can then be regenerated ad infinitum by the reading device; whereas a 'sound wave' will have a significant 'duration' dimension, and will be reproduced rather then regenerated.
patrickfor Jan 10, 2014:
I agree with Tony. I must say I was a bit confused in the beginning as the text says "Two types of sound files" and for an IT guy like me a file type refers unambiguously to an extension name (like .mp3, .wav...). But then it says "buzzer and sound waves so -IMHO buzzer is one type and sound is the other one....
Platary (X) Jan 10, 2014:
Tony M Jan 10, 2014:
@ Adrien I don't think so; the text specifically says "...two types of sound file..." WAVE is just the fuller name for a .wav format file, as in "I'm sending you 2 WAVES as attachments to this e-mail". Just as we talk about DOC for .doc files — it's awkward for 'wav', as in EN that would instinctively be pronounced 'wav' with a short a (rhymes with 'have'), hence the natural tendency to write it as 'wave', so it gets pronounced with a long 'a' as in 'haven'. Just the way we also make a word out of JPEG (which is, of course, a correct acronym in the first place) so as to pronounce it 'jay-peg', rather than .jpg ('jay-pee-gee')
Platary (X) Jan 10, 2014:

frequency-based sound

Tapez fichier .wav + ronflement + recherche comparative....
Note from asker:

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruit_blanc
sinon le bruit est rose ou coloré:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruit_rose

disagree Tony M : This is not describing a particular sound like pink/white noise, but rather, a type of sound: 'buzzer', being a purely technical sound generated from frequencies (i.e. not random 'noise'), nor a 'sound stream' with specific audio content.

fichier Wave / Wav ronfleur

"Make settings for Sound .
Enable/disable sound and adjust the volume.
Two types of sound files can be stored in the XXX memory, buzzer and sound (stream) waves. A is a frequency-based sound generated by the tool. The buzzer wave can be programmed by the user (as default one buzzer is included in Power Focus). A Sound (stream) wave is a pre-programmed “wav file” that can be downloaded from disk (hard drive/ file). It is possible to use a microphone to record wav files and download them to Power Focus.
Buzzer wave
To select an existing buzzer wave, select an ID number from the drop down menu (as default one buzzer wave is included).
To create a new buzzer wave, click Add buzzer . It is possible to store up to 10 buzzer waves in XXX".

in other words, there is a choice between the default "buzzer.wav" or your own personalized buzzer alarm sound wave "my_sound.wav".
As for formats, even Windows 8.1 still has its system sounds as *.wav files.
And as the context specifically states that theses sound waves are "stored in memory", there is no doubt that this is about sound files.
