A status hearing is a pre-trial discussion about a criminal case, held in open court, in the presence of the prosecutor, defence counsel, defendant, a District Court judge, and sometimes the complainant. The discussion is often resolution-focused: that is, whether the defendant’s intention to proceed to trial might be altered by amendments to the charges or alleged facts, or an indication from the judge of the likely sentence.
