A precondition for the smooth operation of the data transmission system over the UIC train bus in trains made up of individual coaches and in multiple units, which can also include trainsets, is the carrying out of the inauguration.
The inauguration is divided into the two parts given below:
- TCN inauguration to guarantee the data transmission as specified in IEC Standard 61375;
- UIC inauguration for the formation of the actual vehicle configuration regarding the data traffic.

INAUGURATION
The inauguration of the system of remote control for traction is composed of the inauguration of the network (or TCN inauguration), specified in the standard, and of the inauguration of the application users (or UIC inauguration) that supplies the system with
information relative to the characteristics and operating conditions of the vehicles in the composition. The two parts of the inauguration have to occur simultaneously, even if from a logical point of view they can be thought of as separate. The end result of TCN inauguration is
the distribution of the topography to all the participants in the network (users), while that of UIC inauguration (see the UIC 556 sheet) is the distribution of a database containing the configuration of the applications of all the vehicles. Subsequent to these two phases of inauguration the normal operations of data transfer can begin.
The procedure of inauguration of the train has to ensure:
· that the communications network is fully operational
· that all information relevant for the user and relative to communication through the network is stored in a distributed and common data-base that will permit the user processes to be addressed as indicated previously· that a single dedicated node is not necessary for management of data transmission.
Inauguration of the train starts when the nodes on the bus pass from the disconnected to the active state. After finishing the phase of configuration of the bus, the network can transfer the PD and MD and enter into the state of definition of the train database, that is a database used by the user functions for communication among the various vehicles.This database is created and distributed to all the nodes of the network and then thenetwork starts regular operation.
