I think it refers to cases that has a sufficient number; if there isn't an adequate number of cases, there is no necessity to 精査, but if there is, the author thinks it is necessary. My suggestion is just to help you get the meaning of 揃う, and you need to change the wording to fit the sentence.

I think here "揃う" is closer in meaning to combined so I would go with "total number of cases", or "combined number of cases" if you need to distinguish between terms.

I think that 「症例」and 「数のそろう例」should be thought of separately. In other words, I don't think it's talking about 「症例数」. The author even uses the phrase 「数のそろう例」again later.
Usually psychological diagnoses are made based on the number of typical symptoms present, as it's not cut-and-dry like physical symptoms.
In that context 揃う makes more sense. I read it as they are throwing out cases that don't have a clear-cut number of symptoms for diagnosis to make the study simpler. But not my field but hope this helps.
