"subject-matter competence" and "territorial or material competence"
“subject-matter competence” means the aspects of a court’s jurisdiction that depend on factors other than those pertaining to the court’s territorial competence; («compétence matérielle»),
“territorial competence” means the aspects of a court’s jurisdiction that depend on a connection between:
(a) the territory or legal system of the state in which the court is established; and

The competence of the courts of law between them is established through the jurisdictional competence rules. The jurisdictional competence appears under two forms:
material competence (attribution): thereby the jurisdictional prerogatives are delimited vertically between courts of law of different degrees;
territorial competence: horizontally, the prerogatives of the courts' of law are delimited, for the same degree, on different territorial circumscriptions.
