ignimbrite tuffs Explanation: Geochemistry of the Rosarito Beach Fm., northern Baja California L. Forsythe (CICESE) and D. Pyle (COAS-Oregon State University) The Rosarito Beach Formation crops out along the northern coast of Baja California from the city of Tijuana south to at least the city of Ensenada as a package of mafic lava flows and EDAD DEL VOLCANISMO IGNIMBRITICO, CINEMÁTICA Y MECANISMOS DE DEFORMACIÓN EN LA PARTE SUROESTE DE LA SIERRA MADRE OCCIDENTAL: IMPLICACIONES PARA LA REMOCIÓN DEL SLAB DE LA PLACA FARALLÓN Y LA APERTURA DE LA PARTE SUR DEL GOLFO DE CALIFORNIA TIMING OF IGNIMBRITE FLARE UP, KINEMATICS AND MECHANISM OF DEFORMATION IN THE SOUTHWESTERN SIERRA MADRE OCCIDENTAL: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE FARALLON SLAB AND THE OPENINIG OF THE SOUTHERN GULF OF CALIFORNIA tuffs. K-Ar age dating suggests that volcanism in the area may have spanned at least 2 m.y. and been at least partially submarine. The age of volcanism, 14-16 Ma, lies within (toward the end of?) the transition period from subduction of the Farallon plate under the field area to welding of the Baja peninsula to the Pacific/Farallon remnants and jump of the North America/Pacific plate boundary eastward to the Gulf of California. Rosarito Beach is coeval to volcanism to the east of the Peninsular Ranges Batholith, such as the northern Sierra Juarez volcanic field, which has arclike geochemical signatures (incompatible element enrichment and Nb anomalies) suggesting that either subduction processes or subduction-modified sources were involved in their evolution. New trace element data is now available for representative Rosarito Beach basaltic andesite lavas which also suggest an enriched component such as subduction modified lithosphere may have been present. Extreme to moderate alteration in many of the lava units complicates understanding the source and processes involved in their formation and evolution but modeling now underway will hopefully provide a window through this alteration and allow better interpretation of the tectonic regime active during this time whether active or waning subduction, or alternatively an early extensional episode. If subduction related, then Rosarito Beach should represent a fore-arc facies of the coeval arc volcanism located in the northern Sierra Juarez.
