German term
Dokumentation der Kontrollschritte
German to English
Bus/Financial
IT (Information Technology)
Process management
This is the context. It is from an IT product catalogue and this part concerns routine checks that are carried out when processing electronic forms.
There are two parts to this sentence, both of which are troublesome, so I'm putting them up one at at a time. Here is the first one:
"Routinekontrollen sind aus Prozesssicht von besonderer Bedeutung, wenn bei der Dokumentation der Kontrollschritte Mängel bzw. Abweichungen erfasst wurden."
"From the point of view of processing, routine checks are particularly significant if... " and that's where I start to have trouble. Can any one help me decipher the last part of the sentence?
Thank you in advance

: No deficiencies in control measures (as you stated yourself) but I don't quite understand what you mean by "deficient recordings" - the control steps show that there are deficiencies / defects.

: we're not talking about deficiencies in control measures, but in whatever it is that the control measures are designed to find deficiencies in!

documentation of the steps taken in the control procedure
something like the following:
... where defects or deviations [from spec.] were detected during documentation of the steps taken in the control/checking procedure.
What's important here (I think!) is that the various steps of the control procedure are each documented, and that that documentation helps reveal defects and deviations from spec.
I'd like to make the sentence less wordy, but "control steps" just doesn't do it for me. Sometimes German is just much more concise than English.

Discussion
Typically (as it is a so-called false friend):
control = Steuerung
check/inspection = Kontrolle
If at all, "quality control steps" in reference to quality control = Qualitätssteuerung, not just "control". David's "routine checks" or "regular inspections" would work for "Routinekontrollen". You could incorporate Astrid's "checklist" by saying "if the checklist reveals any quality deficiencies in the inspected items" (defect = broken / deficiency = lack of). That's how I understand "bei der".
On a side note, defect and deficiency do not have the same meaning. Depends on how you define "Mängel".
You could also just say: "Regular inspections are key to quality control management whenever they (help to) uncover any defects or deficiencies in a product".
This is how I understand it. In simple terms: routine checks are not particularly significant from a process view as long as no faults are recorded.
A slightly nonsensical sentence perhaps, but I wouldn't know how else to read it.
