German term

den Maßstab bilden

German to English Science IT (Information Technology) Computer linguistics
Hi there!

I would appreciate assistance in translating the phrase "den Maßstab [...] bilden [...]" in the sentence below:

[Zwar benötigt man Frequenzlisten der jeweiligen Korpora als Grundlage für die Berechnung von Keywords, doch]
den Maßstab [zur Identifizierung von Fachterminologie] bilden Häufigkeitsklassen oder Signifikanzmaße.

(= man orientiert sich an Häufigkeitsklassen oder Signifikanzmaßen; sie bilden den Bezugspunkt)

That's my draft:
"[Indeed, frequency lists of the corpora are required as a basis for the calculation of keywords, but] the benchmark [for identifying technical terminology] constitute frequency classes or significance measures"

Does this sound idiomatic and render the meaning?

Thanks a lot!

Exactly. (I agree with polyglot45.) It should read: "... but frequency classes or frequency measures are the benchmark for identifying ..."
polyglot45 Apr 20, 2015:
you seem to have confused subject and object in the last part - the verb is plural

are the benchmark

Or "are used as", or "serve as" the benchmark.
As polyglot45 says, you've misunderstood the German. Frequency classes and significance measures are the subject of the sentence - hence "den Maßstab bilden" rather than "der Maßstab bildet".
Note from asker:
It's a bad habit of sticking too much to the source text when translating complex sentences and hence I transferred the German word order (OVS). Thanks a lot for pointing that out. Moreover, I wasn't sure about the terms "benchmark" and "constitute" (whether they collocate and whether they are the best choice). I like the "simple" version of just saying "are the benchmark". Always appreciate your fast and competent assistance!
