I think the director's emphasis is on the second part of the sentence. He's making a contrast between the line of thinking based on words and the structure of a visual essay, a composition, or a discourse. The contrast is not just between words and images, but also between the linguistic narratives and the visual development. “Parallel” is the key word here. I think any oversimplification of the second part would be insufficient to manifest his point.
