espigas

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
Hi everyone,

Could you help with the translation of "espigas"? It's for an orthopaedic equipment website and there is regular mention of "espigas en el cuello" and "espigas en la rodilla".

There is no medical definition in the RAE or medical dictionaries (http://dle.rae.es/?id=GaVx62l), however from deduction I think it may be "tingling" or "pins and needles".

Any suggestions?

Ask the client Agree with neilmac that it sounds like a back translation – not of "pins and needles" probably, as pins and needles are not an indication for wearing a brace. Something like "stabbing" or "lancinating pain" may have been the origin, but you never know.

Also, from my research I found that "espigas" can = a figure-of-eight bandage.

You need to research this thoroughly, as I have done, but nowhere in my research does "espigas" = pins and needles!

IMHO If "Espigas" appears in a list of conditions/symptoms, then I'd assume it must be a ropey back translation of "pins and needles", as the Spanish term I'd usually expect to see in the context would be something else (hormigueo, adormecimiento, acorchamiento, agujetas...) .

More context "Espigas" appear in a list of conditions (back pain, migraines, stretched ligaments etc) that can be prevented/improved by using an orthopaedic neck/knee brace. The list literally says "Espigas en el cuello" or "Espigas en la rodilla". Hence the possibility of "pins and needles" or "tingling". Thanks!

Could you provide some more context? Depending on the context, "espiga" can be something quite different from "tingling".

Thanks for all the suggestions. However, I don't really see how "pins" is a medical condition that can be helped by wearing a neck brace :-) Hence, the idea of "pins and needles" or "tingling"

It appears to be some sort of pin. In dentistry, for instance, we have dental pins (espigas dentales).
