Italian term

animali sinantropi

Italian to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) animals
This is from a text on the contamination of sandboxes in public areas. "Animali sinantropi" are not pets but the kind of animals that don't belong to humans but share space with humans like pidgeons, mice, rats etc.

I need the exact English term.
Many thanks!

Discussion

EleoE Oct 2, 2016:
If text is for laymen I would say urban wildlife.
Anthony Green Oct 2, 2016:
what sort of text is it? if it's any type of text a layman would be reading then I would try to steer clear of synanthropic etc. as most people wouldn't have the foggiest what it meant. If it's technical, then perhaps ...
Fiona Grace Peterson Oct 2, 2016:
One alternative may be "pest animals", although from what i can gather, this is only a part of the synanthrope group.

synanthropic animals

Broad patterns in domestic vector-borne Trypanosoma cruzi transmission dynamics: synanthropic animals and vector controltransmission to humans. Here, we ask, (1) do synanthropic animals need to be targeted in Chagas disease prevention policies?, and (2) how does the presence of animals affect the efficacy of vector control?"

(a) synanthrope

wikipedia, if reliable for you

without "animal" just "a synanthrope, apparently
Peer comment(s):

neutral EleoE : A synanthrope could also be a plant. You need to specify.

wild animals

You haven't said what kind of text this is, but unless it's a scholarly piece for zoologists, no one will know what synanthropic means.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Anthony Green : sorry Phil, just read your explanation, though wild animals may be a little too broad. Some more context would help

"The kind of animals that don't belong to humans but share space with humans like pigeons, mice, rats etc". I would call them wild animals.

feral animals

when describing animals which - as appears to be the case here - are descended from domesticated forebears, such as cats and pigeons, though this of course specifically excludes foxes and other urban wildlife such as hedgehogs, badgers etc. then the correct word is without doubt "feral", which is a technical word which I believe any layman interested in ecology would understand, whereas I feel synanthropic is far too technical.
Otherwise I would use "urban wildlife" I suppose

La definizione che ne dà la wikipedia inglese è pressoché identica:
