Albanian term

vretën

Non-PRO Albanian to English Law/Patents Real Estate From a court case discussing land ownership and return, etc.
"një sipërfaqe trualli prej 410 vretën"

Just where one would expect "m2" or something. Is this an obscure unit of area?

Discussion

Harold Lemel Mar 21, 2017:
Yes, I agree that it's strange that they would use this term instead of m2...One thought: Perhaps there is some old document using this unit that the people in question would like to establish a link to.

vretën

Vreten are an old measure of area that is somewhat larger than another traditional measure, dynym, which is about 1,000 sq. meters or 1 decare (1 decare = 1/10th of a hectare)...

In one reference seen below, the equivalence is: 1 vreten = 1.25 decare = 1,250 sq meters

There is also an older discussion of this on ProZ:

FLETORJA ZYRTARE - Qendra e Botimeve Zyrtare
www.qbz.gov.al/botime/fletore_zyrtare/2011/PDF.../114-2011....
..... siperfaqe 950 vreten ose 118.75 ha....

Perhaps best to translate as "410 vreten or 51,250 sq. meters" ...[OR 51.25 hectares] ....

By the way...a truall refers to a house lot ...but in this case it would seem to refer to an are designated or zoned for house lots, since it's so large an area.
Something went wrong...
4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Yes. Also I'd say "truall" here is best rendered "brownfield site". But it's strange that the document decided to throw in this one case of "vreten" when everything else is in m2."
