Spanish term

se solicita poder reducir

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Law: Taxation & Customs
Hi.

I'm proofreading a collection of translated documents, including a section on personal tax returns.

This section is entitled "Exceso no reducido de las aportaciones a la mutualidad de previsión social"
Sentence: "Aportaciones y contribuciones de 2009 no aplicadas cuyo importe se solicita poder reducir en los 5 ejercicios siguientes"

Translation: "Contributions from 2009 no applied whose amount is requested to reduce in the 5 next periods"

Obviously there are issued with "no applied" but beyond that, can anyone help improve this?

Thanks in advance

Discussion

Robert Carter Apr 13, 2017:
I'm assuming there must be something missing because are three verbs together here. We'd normally want to see a preposition somewhere in amongst them, I think.
Mr.Q (asker) Apr 13, 2017:
Are you suggesting there is a mistake in the original ST? Thanks.
Robert Carter Apr 13, 2017:
Perhaps adding "para" in there makes a little more sense, e.g., "se solicita para poder reducir".

for which deduction (over the next five years) is being requested

No mistake in the original. The taxpayer has been unable to deduct pension payments and contributions, and therefore reports the amount that it wants to deduct over the next five years on a line on the Rentas return that reads exactly as you indicate, and roughly translates as:
"Pension payments and contributions from 2009 not deducted on the tax return for which deduction over the next five years is being requested"
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Or. more simply, "to be deducted/offset over the next five years".

Yes. Thanks, Phil!
agree neilmac : I'd assumed it was a request from the taxpayer, but the essential gist is the same....

we (hereby) request permission to

At a glance, it looks like there are asking for authorisation to do something over the next five tax years.
NB: I don't know about "applied"; as I see it, they mean "paid" or the obligation fulfilled, but the negative phrase would be either "non-applied" or "not applied".
"Contributions from 2009 not paid/fulfilled, for which we hereby request permission to liquidate over the next 5 tax years."

PS: I know there's no hereby in the original, but I think it looks neat in the translation.

NB: I put liquidate (= pay back), but if they only intend to repay some of the amount due, then "reduce" should work.
