is there ANY way "termostato" can mean an oven/furnace, "stufa" type heating device instead of what we all know it to mean, i.e. a gizmo to make something happen at a certain temp?
Sorry if this is a weird question, but it simply does not fit in the text at all, and either the author made a mistake or there is something neither the translator nor I are seeing ...

La frase, come avevo chiesto, ha aiutato molto; a parte l'improprietà del linguaggio, dice che i campioni devono essere termocondizionati e poi dice con una camera fredda (frigorifero, la cui temperatura è controllata da un termostato) ed un'altra camera che erroneamente chiamano "termostato" e che potrebbe essere ad una costante temperatura, ad es. di 18-20 °C (anch'essa controllata da termostato).
Camera termostatica, come suggerito da Elena, mi sembra molto corretto.
