Aquí me refiero a la frase; me cuesta trabajo leerla, porque no acabo de decidirme si for the filmmaker se refiere al propio Cassavetes o a cualquier director que se enfrenta a la filmografía de Cassavetes.
Lo aportado de contexto parece dejar claro que disruptor-stand-in está relacionado al menos con Chet, con Gus... con personajes.
¿Tal vez -sí no es mucho pedir-, algo del texto antecedente?

It’s not accidental that there is almost always a disruptor-stand-in for the filmmaker in each of Cassavetes’ films. (Think Chet, think Gus, think Moskowitz, think Gloria, think Sarah Lawson.) Insofar as Cassavetes himself experienced the world’s reaction to such assaults on its received forms of knowing and being virtually every day of his life, he is clear-eyed about the consequences. The world does not take such threats quietly or passively. NO SÉ SI ACLARA MUCHO, LA VERDAD...TIENE UNO QUE HABER VISTO TODA LA FILMOGRAFÍA DEL DIRECTOR
