@ Phil I see it all the time, it seems to be a common error; I think people think it sounds posh to use 'the latter', and it often gets them out of a hole in terms of sentence strcuture; but they don't seem to udnerstand the illogicality of it. I suppose in their mind, it must refer back to the last-mentioned person who would be a possible subject for the following verb — not quite the same logic as in EN.

the medication in question is prescribed for bone density problems, which is probably why they are saying she has been compliant with treatment.

Poor grammar! As it is written, the 'cette dernière' would appear to refer back to 'une vertebre' — though I somehow doubt that a vertebra would have anything to do with being compliant!

I'm intrigued to know, though, why compliance with the treatment has anything to do with a broken vertebra? Unless, i suppose, it was broken as a result of a fall, and the treatment was to prevent vertigo or something...?
