Some parts of our machine have interchangeable parts – changed when a different product is running through the machine. The ProFlow crossbar is one of these parts. The correct length crossbar has to be fitted – to match the size of the board being produced.

Looking at this text, I can imagine you will want to know more about “Verification”. Some customers put barcodes on the different interchangeable parts, so that the system can “verify” the operator has fitted the correct option parts at the start of each production batch. Before the machine will print a board, the operator has to use a hand held scanner to read the barcodes, and the printer then compares what is fitted to what it thinks should be fitted for that product. This is “Verification”.

The printer needs to know the attributes of the barcode – otherwise it’s just a series of thick and thin lines. There are rules about how to design a barcode, based on number of characters you are trying to represent, if they are numeric or alphanumeric, and if the first character is a known value like a key. So you will see “start character” and “name length” in other contexts – but it will be on something that relates to reading a barcode.
