I need help with the term 水平移动距离 in the following sentence:
自动扶梯梯级从梳齿板出来的梯级前缘和进入梳齿板的梯级后缘的水平移动距离：
—— 在自动扶梯上部出入口，不应小于1.2m。当自动扶梯的提升高度大于10m或名义速度为0.65m/s时，宜不小于1.6m；
—— 在自动扶梯下部出入口，不应小于1.2m。
I know that it means "horizontal shift", but it doesn't make any sense to me.
Does it mean that the horizontal shift form the front edge to the back edge of an step should not be greater than 1.2 m?

Hi Egmont, I believe this refers to the horizontal runs at the upper and lower landings of the escalator when the steps are horizontal with each other. The minimum length should be 1.2 m, or 1.6 m if the speed is 0.65 m/s.

Not 100% certain about this, but I think it's talking about the length of the horizontal section at the top and bottom of the escalator. There's a metal plate that we walk on, and underneath that plate, the steps are gliding along horizontally, before they emerge from the plate, we step on, and they start going up/down.
Escalator steps are 400mm wide, so the increments are right - the flat landing part can be 3 steps (1.2m) or 4 steps (1.6m) long. It needs to be longer to properly anchor a super-long 10m escalator. And the top landing is often longer than the bottom landing.

The horizontal movement distance
It just means "the horizontal movement length/distance". This movement is actually hidden under the top/bottom platform. After the transition phase, the steps "vanished" into "horizontal movement phase", and it will travel horizontally for 1.2 m or more. 水平移动距离 is just the length of this phase.
