Franklin drank deep of the Protestant ethic

English to French Other History
Franklin drank deep of the Protestant ethic but ultimately, discomforted by church constraints, he became a freethinker. Neverthless, all his life he kept Sundays free for reading and study.

Tony M Dec 14, 2018:
@ Maïté The trouble is, 'drank deeply' bears a strong connotation of 'swallowing', with, in the case of religious dogma, the potential notion of 'gober'; I think 'nourrir' changes the tone too much to work properly here.
Maïté Mendiondo-George Dec 14, 2018:
s'était passablement nourri de morale protestante il me semble que s' abreuver passe mal en français et qu'il vaut lieux changer légèrement l'image
Isabelle Cluzel Dec 14, 2018:
dring drang drungen ;)
Tony M Dec 14, 2018:
@ Renata Why would you assume a typo in the source text, seeking to replace a perfectly valid and understandable EN word with a German word that isn't even used in EN?
polyglot45 Dec 14, 2018:
@Renata no - it is right as it is
Renate Radziwill-Rall Dec 14, 2018:
I think "... drang deep ..."

neutral Tony M : The use of 'imprégner' suggests some external influence, immersion... (parents, upbringing, etc.) — whereas here, 'drank' definitely implies a voluntary act on his part.

agree Anne Bohy : I agree, because I've read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, and this French expression would be the most accurate of the three.
