This is a vague general expression in English. It can mean a harmless flirtation or a full on relationship. It can mean a kiss or all the way!!! I could say "ils couchent ensemble" but that takes away the 'useful' vagueness of the original expression. Does anyone know if there is a similar equivalence in French. I've come up with nothing...
the sentence is 'they are hooking up' and the meaning is intended as relationship/sexual. Target audience: people in their twenties wanting to watch reality TV with celebrities

tapiner, racoler, draguer - tirer un coup

The first two words are what the expression would mean so far as prostitution is concerned. "racoler" is what the law uses as a misdemeanour. Now, taking into account a "softer" situation (though...) such as reality shows, the act of trying to sexually attract a person would rather be rendered by "draguer" or "faire du gringue". If you're a lady with principles, you'll use "faire du charme", "faire la cour", the sexual aspect never being crudely put in your culture. However, now, hooking up generally refers to the sexual act itself, and certainly a casual one rather than an ongoing relation. Though rude, "tirer un coup" means screwing someone. We use "c'est un bon coup", meaning that the person you're speaking of is a grand sexual experience, and you never speak like that about someone you intend to marry or to live with. Reality shows seem to be the place where people use to "tirer un coup" and then go the the someone else.
