For example, when I was at X company and was given responsibility for managing the merchandise function in addition to marketing, I was dissatis ed with our Monday-morning merchandise meetings. They felt rote and very “rearview mirror”– oriented to me, consisting of the category merchants reporting on their sales and margin rates and their inventory levels from the prior week. I wasn’t sure how to change it, so I posed the question to my direct reports: How can I make this Monday merchandise meeting more about building the business and not merely a boring report- ing of the numbers? Within ve minutes a great idea emerged from the team: have every category merchandise manager lead off their portion of the meeting by bringing in and showing something that struck them from their weekend market tours. They would share something that caught their attention and pointed to a market- place trend—a new product, a technology device, a new service, a new retailer, an interesting and timely article in a magazine or newspaper, a powerful advertisement—and explain how the item represented might be applied to build our business. I loved the idea and immediately applied it to the merchandise meeting. The merchants enjoyed this stimulating session because it stoked their creativity.
