@ Asker Normally, in any kind of reel-to-reel system (e.g. old-fashioned tape recorders!) you would have a supply or feed spool, and a take-up spool which 'takes up' the band that is being fed.
I don't quite see how this works in a strapping machine, since usually it is a single-ended operation; but resumably your manual has illustrations which show what this is referring to?
